Saturday Morning Video: Avatar/Ferngully- Earth Day message with forest fairies
Posted by: Sentinel News Service on Apr 18, 2010Remember it's Earth Day next week. We need to defend mother nature because without us, nature will be destroy by..US. Sounds strange from the broad general view.. but, the important point is, that life on Earth had evolved over hundreds of millions of years, but in the last 100 years has had a huge impact on the environment. So much so that we may destroy the Earth! Well, I guess, that's not really true..since life on Earth has been around long before us...I guess, it's..uh..life on Earth as we LIKE IT.. might be destroyed. That's what we have [save the] Earth [as we like it] Day every year..uh...don't listen to me, the video says it all.
SMV: Chervona @ The Edgefield
Posted by: Sentinel News Service on Jun 05, 2010FROM VIDEO BLOGGER DAVE HUNTER
"Chervona recorded at The Edgefield's "Loading Dock" Stage. Over the last 3 years Chervona has played about 200 performances from Vancouver, BC to Los Angeles. Despite the weather, Edgefield patrons watched, listened and danced to Chervona's music- some calling Chervona the best Northwest Party Band"

SMV: Sentinel wins "major award" for journalism and stuff
Posted by: Sentinel News Service on May 23, 2010
Last night, May 22nd, ego-maniacal publisher Cornelius Swart apparently won a major award thingy from the Society of Professional Journalists. Swart was awarded first place in the category of Best Online Coverage for this publication's 2009 stories on North Precinct. The Sentinel competed in the category of non-daily newspaper with a circulation of 8,000 or more. This category includes publications like Oregon Business Magazine and the Willamette Week.
"I am gratified to see that years of ruthlessly pursuing my own self interest has finally paid off," said Swart in an acceptance speech that lasted approximately 6 hours and 41 minutes. "This is a tremendous honor. I have no one to thank."
Typical of Swart's solipsistic blundering and general nincompoopery, he neglected to mention that he was only one member of an editorial team that covered the precinct. The team included Roger Anthony, Rebecca Robinson, Justin Dean, Rebbeca Bartleson, Jason Kaplan and William Crawford.
"I don't even know those people," said Swart defensively, when asked about his oversight.

Rex Burkholder, Metro President Candidate, bike tour of N/NE
Posted by: Sentinel News Service on May 03, 2010A Ride with Rex: Leg 7 - Series Finale from Rex for Metro President on Vimeo.
Here's a video blog by Metro Presidential candidate Rex Burkholder. Burkholder has represented N/NE on the Metropolitan Regional Government since 2000. He's a big bike advocate and a technocrat (which always scores big points with the Sentinel) who has worked quietly behind the scenes to help fund projects in our coverage area, from bike lanes to the Linnton Community Center. Now he's got his site set for the top position at this, the wonkiest governmental body in Portland (which is perhaps the most wonky government loving town in the country). This video is the 'season finale' of a 7 bike ride through North/Northeast. It's sort of a fun new media take on the old whistle stop campaign trails of old.
SMV: TV anchorman of the future
Posted by: Sentinel News Service on Apr 24, 2010One of the most viewed videos on youtube this week is Jay William Johnson's latest blog called Robot Mouth.
Johnson is doing a style that's been out there for years. These blogs use topical stand up style comedy with quick cut away punch lines that works great with the intimate user experience allowed by youtube. He's also maxing out the emerging tech tools and trends: seemlessly bringing in video hyperlinks, twitter flow and user comment into the show in a way that doesn't seemed forced. He's also plugging t-shirt sales.
Leno and the like can't compete. Johnson and his cohorts will surely take over the world! Or at least, here's to hoping they do.
SMV: Reality TV revolution: earnestness
Posted by: Sentinel News Service on Apr 10, 2010
First off, there are few things here at SMV that we dislike more than earnestness. The only thing worse than earnestness is spending time watching network television. But this weekend, SMV will make an exception. Last night the new ABC show Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution came on, and like all good reality tv, we just couldn't look away.
Jamie Oliver is a self made man and chef who helped change the way food is prepared in the British public school system. Oliver's goal now is to change how the city of Huntington West Virginia, "Unhealthiest City in America", prepares its food.
There have been lots of positive angled reality shows over the last few year. There have been shows where dietitians try to help families lose weight, shows where big corporations fix up people's homes, ect. But most of these shows do projects that improve people’s lives one person, or one family at a time. For SMV's money these shows aren't nearly as fun to watch the as the grasping, narcissistic and diluted folks that are forced to do battle with one another on shows like Big Brother, American Idol, Survivor, The Apprentice and the like. However, Food Revolution is exciting to watch and somehow doesn't pander to its audience or degrade its primary characters (who would have thought it was possible).
Saturday Morning Video: Buses ain't that bad
Posted by: Sentinel News Service on Apr 03, 2010The "brain trust" in the Sentinel editorial department tells us that we've got a story coming Monday, from the Oregon News Incubator about public transit. So, in anticipation of that, here's the lastest from www.failblog.org. This seems like a Russian clowncar of some sort. But it may be the future of public transit here in Portland if things get much worse.

Saturday Morning Video: All Hail, the original 'The Office'
Posted by: Sentinel News Service on Feb 20, 2010At SMV we often cultivate what we call "emotional texture" meaning things that intentionally produce multiple conflicting emotional experiences at once. Here is a tribute to the great pioneers of this form of affect, the great BBC, 'The Office' (single quotes used in tribute to the Queen's English). We're not sure that the American version ever got as edgy as the British one. So if you haven't see the BBC version be prepared for the best/worst.
