It's time for the 2nd Annual Haiku Contest!
Topic: Portland's (elevated) water storage towers
About Haiku:

Haiku is a Japanese verse form that relies on brevity and simplicity to convey its
message. It contains three lines of five, seven, and five syllables, and frequently
includes natural images or themes.

Example:Morning light appears (five syllables) The new day has awoken (seven
syllables) Nature stirs and sighs (five syllables)

About the bureau's water storage tanks:

Water storage tanks have two primary functions:(1) They guarantee that a particular
neighborhood in a service area will have adequate water pressures during all times
of day, no matter what the season. Elevating water in tanks improves pressure
throughout the system.(2) They ensure that there is adequate water supply throughout
the city to fight fires.
What kind of water tanks does Portland have?
Tanks come in all shapes, sizes and configurations. Portland has sixty-four tanks,
total. They are constructed either of concrete or steel. The concrete tanks hold
from sixty thousand gallons to four million gallons of water. (The transmission
tanks at Powell Butte are bigger.) The balance of the other tanks are steel with
either riveted, or welded construction that hold from thirty thousand gallons to
over five million gallons of water.

Tanks may be:• Buried underground• Partially buried• Ground
level• Standpipes (taller than they are round - so they look like a tall
cylinder)• Elevated (either on multiple columns, or a single
‘Hydropillar') -- shown in the photo, this type is the topic of the haiku
contest.
