Barr accepts as Prez: A new day for LP; former Reform Party chairman to manage campaign
After six rounds of voting (I'm leading in with that because Jeff Brady from NPR is leading with that), Bob Barr has emerged as the most prominently known Libertarian candidate in party's 36-year history. While the nomination process may have been divisive, Barr stated that he was ready for the national campaign as shown in the following video. PENDING
Barr's campaign manager is Russ Verney, who was involved in the Ross Perot campaign of 1992, was campaign manager for Perot in 1996, and was established with the creation of the Reform Party.
Vereny stated that the campaign headquarters would be located in Atlanta Georgia. Here is a quick Q & A:
The Sentinel: What will you do differently than you did with Ross Perot?
RV: We believed that we would be in the debates in 1996. We husbanded all our money for after the debates. Then we were shut out (Perot debated nationally in '92 but not in '96). ... So we're spending our resources differently in case we don't get into the debates this time.
REASON Magazine: What is different about this year's election as opposed to the Ross Perot elections?
RV: It's different in that there's even greater voter dissatisfaction than in '92 and '96. The dynamic for this election are even better. The president's numbers are down more. He's way down there. Voter discontent is way up.
Q: What's your view on negative campaigning?
RV: The dynamics of an election when there are three candidates reduces the effectiveness of negative campaigning. [Verney went on to say that you campaign negatively to bring your opponent down. But in a three-way race that could also result in your second opponent gaining ground on you.] We look forward to running a positive campaign.
Bob Barr will be at a speaking engagement next month in Oregon. The Sentinel will attempt to bring you coverage.
