Opponents to a proposed rezoning of the Colwood National Golf Club (7313 N.E. Columbia Blvd.) unveiled their website today: www.keepcolwoodgreen.com

The 6,040-yard 18-hole course is being eyed as the site for a new runway at Portland International Airport. The course, which is open to the public, opened in 1929. Greens fees for 18 holes can be as low as $28 on weekdays, and there are reduced rates for seniors. Colwood's wide fairways make it a friendly venue for the novice golfer.

The rezoning of Colwood is opposed by the North Northeast Business Association, the Concordia Neighborhood Association, and the Urban Greenspaces Institute. These disparate groups oppose the rezoning because it would result in a permanent loss of open space, negatively impact the wildlife and habitat of the Columbia and Whitaker Slough, and increase pollution in North and Northeast Portland.

Portland's Bureau of Development Services held a hearing on the rezoning request. A recommendation from the hearing officer, Greg Frank, is expected by May 15. The hearing officer’s recommendation will then go to the City Commissioners for final consideration.
